Portfolio Exhibit: Francois Batet, Lester Johnson & Claude Weisbuch
We are pleased to present a Portfolio Exhibit of color lithographs by Francois Batet, color serigraphs by Lester Johnson and color lithographs by Claude Weisbuch. An opening reception will be held on Gallery Night & Day, Friday, January 20, 2012 from 5 - 9 pm and Saturday, January 21, 2012 from 11 am - 5:00 pm. The exhibit will run through April 14, 2012.
Batet, born in Barcelona, Spain, studied famous French impressionistic painters in Paris. His classic School of Paris Series recalls the spirit of Paris in the 1902's and 1930's. Batet has exhibited throughout the world including France, U.S.A., Japan, Belgium, Germany, England, Korea, Australia and South Africa. In addition to being a master printmaker, he has illustrated over 100 books.
Lester Johnson (Second Generation New York School, born 1919, died 2010) taught figure drawing at Yale until his retirement in 1989. A maverick associate of the Abstract Expressionists in New York, he found his subject matter in the joys and sorrows of ordinary people on the street featured in the Street Scene portfolio. He paints women in colorful print dresses and men wearing bowler hats and baseball caps.
Born in 1927, world renowned French artist, Claude Weisbuch, was at a very early age able to ally an eminently classical style with a very contemporary satirical sense through movement and setting. Among his favorite subjects are Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Don Quixote, horses and musical themes. The portfolio series featured in this exhibit is titled "Homage to Leonardo da Vinci".

Treasures of Zimbabwe
African Shona Stone Sculpture. This extraordinary show of over 250 stone sculptures from Zimbabwe, ranging in size from six inches to over seven feet, and weighing from ten to 1,500 pounds, includes work by both established masters and remarkable emerging artists. It is a celebration of the oldest, noblest, and perhaps most demanding discipline of the visual arts…hand-carved stone sculpture. Against all odds, through political turmoil, poverty, famine, and AIDS, these determined Zimbabwean artists are able to produce some of the most powerfully expressive and unique contemporary sculpture in the world today. The work of these sculptors has been exhibited in prestigious museums such as the Rodin Museum in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Chicago Botanic Gardens. Artists include Witness Bonjesi, Washington Msonza, John Takawira, Jonathan Mhondorohuma, Gerald Takawira and Colleen Madamombe. Small scale sculptures available at the David Barnett Gallery; large scale sculptures available for viewing by appointment only.

45th Anniversary Exhibition
We are pleased to present our 45th Anniversary Exhibition. An opening reception will be held on Gallery Night & Day, Friday, April 15, 2011 from 5:00pm to 9:00pm and Saturday, April 16, 2011 from 11:00am to 5:00pm. The exhibit will run through July 16, 2011.
The gallery will be featuring original color lithographs by Marc Chagall. In addition, a select group of works by artists featured since the gallery was founded in 1966 - local, regional, American Masters, European Masters, Central and South American, Indonesian, Haitian and African.
The David Barnett Gallery has supported and encouraged local artists since the founding of the gallery in 1966. The mission of the gallery was to show graduate student's work from local colleges due to the minimal opportunities to show artwork in Milwaukee at the time. In 1968 the gallery began showing world renowned established masters such as Picasso, Toulouse-Lautrec, Chagall, Miro, Dali, Kandinsky and Pissarro. The profits from these masters work enabled the gallery to fund the promotion and exhibition of unknown and emerging artists throughout Wisconsin.
In 1985, we were the first gallery in Wisconsin to start an internship program for Fine Art and Art History students. The program has afforded dozens of artists and art teachers to gain field experience as well as course credit at the college level. The gallery pioneered this program.
The gallery is always and will always be free and open to the public. Its prime downtown location affords visitors throughout the world the opportunity to experience one of the most diverse collections in the country. It is a museum like experience where the art is for sale.
The gallery has donated over one million dollars in artwork over the years to a variety of non-profit organizations. Some of which, include, the Milwaukee Art Museum, Haggerty Museum of Art, Trout Museum of Art formerly the Appleton Art Center, Lawrence University, Lakeland College, Chazen Museum of Art, the American Lung Association and dozens of other non-profit organizations.
Some of the gallery's long term goals include setting up a non-profit organization to benefit local artists and help further their careers. As an artist, art dealer, art appraiser, art lecturer and art authenticator, David Barnett knows what it's like to participate in the arts from virtually every vantage point. This unique and all encompassing experience and expertise was developed over the last forty five years and will bode well for expanding the gallery's goals in the future.

David Barnett's Solo Show "Up North" Opens at Antiques on Spirit in Tomahawk, WI
"From the age of seven to fourteen I spent every July on Catfish Lake in Eagle River. When I was fourteen I attended Camp Manitowish in Boulder Junction. Starting in 1997 we stayed at the Whippoorwill Inn and North Star Lodge. The UP NORTH series was inspired by a postcard of the Wisconsin license plate with the vanity words UP NORTH that I found at the trading post in Eagle River. The BIRCH BARK series started in 1997 when I was painting at the shore of Star Lake. I looked down and saw some birch bark on the ground and spontaneously picked it up and started painting on it! These experiences in the north woods had a profound effect on me growing up and continue to this day as an adult. My fondness of up north is reflected and expressed in my UP NORTH and BIRCH BARK paintings." - David Barnett. July 28 - September 30, 2010. Oil Paintings by Robert Richter
The Robert Richter exhibition will open on July 23, 2010. An opening reception will be held on Gallery Night & Day, Friday, July 23, 2010 from 5:00pm to 9:00pm and Saturday, July 24, 2010 from 11:00am to 5:00pm. The exhibit will run through October 9, 2010.
Born in Milwaukee, Robert Richter has been painting from the age of 8. His unique paintings are hand carved on wood. The artist comments, "I want my paintings to be stunning from across the room, to beckon, as all good paintings should. And then up close, what a surprise!" The artist lived in New York where he painted literally everything from stage sets to mural commissions. He painted store front windows, lithographs from aluminum plates for actors, T-shirts, costumes, curtains, wall hangings, furniture and floors. His unique experiences, intellect, extraordinary color sensibility result in a stunning style with flavors of Avery and Matisse, but mostly himself.

Original Color Lithographs & Posters by Joan Miro
The Joan Miro exhibition will open on April 16, 2010. An opening reception will be held on Gallery Night & Day, Friday, April 16, 2010 from 5:00pm to 9:00pm and Saturday, April 17, 2010 from 11:00am to 5:00pm. The exhibit will run through July 17, 2010.
Miro’s unique playful iconography and vision places him as one of the 20th century’s greatest artists and masters of Surrealism. His originality and inventiveness has had a profound influence on contemporary artists throughout the world. In the last century of art, Joan Miro is almost without parallel for the energy, the sense of fun, the gift of metamorphosis which he has put to multifarious uses.
This exhibit was inspired by David Barnett’s lifelong love of Miro’s work and his June, 2009 visit to the Miro Museum in Barcelona, Spain. Highlighted will be an important etching and aquatint titled L’Forestiers as well as 18 lithographs from the Series: “Maravillas con Variaciones Acrosticas en el Jardin de Miro”, 12 in black and white and 6 in color. In addition, a special group of original color lithograph posters from David Barnett’s personal collection will be exhibited as well.
Born in Montroig, Spain, in 1893, Miro received the Guggenheim International Art Award in 1958 for his ceramic murals “Night and Day” at the UNESCO building in Paris, France.

Highlighting spirit shadows photography by Robert Kawika Sheer. Complex single exposure performance art photographs taken at night with the artist’s illuminated silhouette as performer within the scene. Settings include the Gehry designed Music Center of L.A. County, Stonehenge and Ansel Adams’ Yosemite haunts.
Carol Summers who has often been described as the best printmaker in the world, is represented in virtually every museum’s contemporary print collection in the U.S. The artist is fascinated with the landscape and its spectacular changes of season, its regal mountains and seas. These landscapes are featured in his woodcuts in an abstract form with bold color.
Born and reared on the northwest coast of Honduras in the steaming heart of what remains of Mayan culture, Angelika Thusius, recreates her observations of placid, heat immersed Honduran life. Thusius indicates the environment by a few colors or details to convey this tropical world where natural elements are as strong as the human element.
Also featured will be ink drawings on handmade amate paper by Mexican master, Miguel Castro Lenero. Elegant and elementary compositions of a reduced chromatic sense, sensual surfaces and a magisterial treatment of the drawing defines Lenero who is represented in galleries and museums throughout the world.
On display you will see David's extensive Indonesian and Haitian art collection; from Indonesia - golek and shadow puppets, masks, wood carvings and paintings; from Haiti - paintings, textiles and metal wall reliefs.
A percentage of the sales of the Haitian works of art will benefit the earthquake victims in Haiti.

In June of 2009, David Barnett traveled to Barcelona, Spain for the opening of the Kees Van Dongen exhibit at the Picasso Museum. Our gallery loaned an important gouache and ink titled “Les Artistes du Cirque” for this traveling exhibit. During Barnett’s visit, he toured the Salvador Dali Museum as well as Dali’s home on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea which inspired him to have this exhibit.
Born in Figuera, Spain in 1904, Dali is the most famous of the Surrealist painters. He studied art at the Madrid Academy and was greatly influenced by the 17th century Dutch masters as well as by contemporary painters, especially Joan Miro and Giorgio de Chirico. His works are in all major museums of Modern Art. Notable examples of his works are at the Metropolitan Museum, Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery and Beaverbrook Art Gallery. Dali’s work is widely collected and is in public and private collections throughout the world.
Born in rural France in 1896, “Masson was the principal inventor of automatism (automatic drawing) or the free flow of line which draws from the subconscious without any preconceived ideas of what images might emerge”, said William Rubin, former Director of the Painting & Sculpture Dept. at the Museum of Modern Art, New York City. Though his automatic drawing started out as abstract, Masson always wound up with a representational image. Masson had an enormous impact on American artists, especially Jackson Pollack. The international importance of Andre Masson’s work makes him a master of Surrealism, along with Max Ernst, Tanguy, Miro and Dali.

Native American Art & Artists
An exhibit of more than 50 artworks by Native American artists and Native American subject matter will be shown July 24, 2009 - October 10, 2009. An opening reception will be held on Gallery Night & Day, Friday, July 24 from 5:00pm to 9:00pm and Saturday, July 25 from 11:00am - 5:00pm. The gallery will be featuring a rare bronze "End of the Trail" by James Earle Fraser. This cast bronze sculpture, standing 35 1/2 inches tall, is possibly the most famous American artwork of the early 20th century. It was an immensely popular work that was cast in various formats and became one of the most iconic images of the struggle of Native Americans. In December of 1930, it was cast as a presentation piece and gift from the Progressive Party (known as the Bull Moose Party) to the Honorable Judge Learned Hand. James Earle Fraser (1876 - 1853) was an internationally known sculptor who designed the Indian-head buffalo nickel.
We will also be highlighting Canadian Iroquois Nation artists who carve Brazilian soapstone sculptures. Some of the artists are Loreene Henry, Todd Longboat and William Skye. Subjects include Indian chiefs, eagles, bears and wolves which are important to their culture. Also featured are lithographs by Leonard Baskin, McKenney & Hall and Seth Eastman; paintings by Charles Damrow, Charles Craig, Fritzi Brod, Ernesto Gutierrez, David Barnett and Sylvia Spicuzza; and a rare Edward Curtis photograph of a Native American girl in her native costume.

Wisconsin Artists Showcase
This exhibit will be shown April 17, 2009 - July 21, 2009. An opening reception will be held Gallery Night & Day, Friday, April 17th from 5:00pm to 9:00pm and Saturday, April 18th from 11:00am - 5:00pm. Featuring a recently acquired rare and important John Steuart Curry, oil on canvas titled "Sketching Wisconsin". This painting signed and dated 1946 is of great art historical significance. It depicts the artist in his overalls standing next to his wife who is seated at an easel recreating the painting. This compositional element of a painting within a painting has been used for centuries by artists such as Degas, Manet and Chagall. The Wisconsin farmscape is the same farm depicted in a major John Steuart Curry from the 1930's now in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
Other historically important Wisconsin artists include Mark Tobey, Harold Altman, Howard Schroedter, Elsa Ulbricht, Aaron Bohrod, Schomer Lichtner, Ruth Grotenrath, Sylvia Spicuzza and Francesco Spicuzza.
Exclusively represented Wisconsin artists include Catherine Holmburg, Dan Muller, David Barnett, Karin Krohne Kaufman, Reginald Gee and Joan Dvorsky. Other Wisconsin artists include Della Wells, Deirdre Schanen, Craig Lueck, Alicia Czechowski, Philip Krejcarek, Cathy Holly, Lee Holt, Kevin Knopp, Joseph Rozman, Kyle Zubatsky, Jean Stamsta, Charles Kraus and Katt Yanda.
We are proud to introduce two Wisconsin artists making their debuts: Alayna Rose and Robert Richter. Rose's brilliantly colorful abstract oils and Richter's playful primitive figurative oils are unique additions to Wisconsin's best.
For the first time, the gallery will exhibit the artworks of all the staff members: John Biersach, Emily Goss, Summer Rose Morrison, Meghan Ray and Sandy Sweeney. As a special feature during the opening reception, staff Picture Framer, John Biersach, known in the music world as Jon Boy Walten will play standards as well as compositions he has written for guitar.

Original Lithographs by Marc Chagall
An exhibit of more than 50 original color lithographs by the Russian born artist, Marc Chagall, will be shown January 16, 2009 - April 11, 2009. An opening reception will be held Gallery Night & Day, Friday, January 16 from 5:00pm to 9:00pm and Saturday, January 17 from 11:00am - 5:00pm. Subjects include self-portraits, biblical scenes, Paris, lovers, musicians, goats, horses, birds and bouquets. The collection spans roughly twenty-five years of Chagall's lyrical and expressive lithographic production. His work is influenced by his Russian Hassidic childhood, life in Paris and the French Riviera. Chagall, a pioneer of modernism, combines the theories of color and space of Cubism, Surrealism, Fauvism and sheer fantasy to create his own colorful visual language. Not limiting himself to any single influence, Chagall's fantastic compositions combine playfulness with an underlying ethereal spirituality.
Of all the print making methods, lithography provided Chagall with the most creative expression. The lithographic method allowed Chagall to simultaneously combine intense spontaneous color with painterly lines and forms. Lithography was an especially meaningful method of expression for Chagall, who once stated, "Whenever I bent over the lithography stone...it was as though I was touching a talisman. It seemed as though I could pour all my sadness and joys into it." Chagall was able to create original lithographs with unique colors rarely achieved by other masters because he had unique, rare pigments custom ground to his own specifications.
In addition, to the Chagall collection, we will feature a new group of mixed media paintings by David Barnett from his famous artist series titled "Homage to Marc Chagall."

La Garconne: 29 Pochoir Prints of Kees van Dongen
To celebrate this summer's Kees van Dongen retrospective at the National Museum of Monaco in Monte Carlo, to which David Barnett is a lender, we will feature an exhibition of one of the most famous series of prints by this important artist. Known as Kees van Dongen, Cornelis Theodorus Maria van Dongen, born January 26, 1877 in Delshaven, Netherlands - died May 28, 1968 in Monte Carlo, Monaco, was a Dutch painter and a member of a group of French painters, known as the Fauves, "Wild Beasts" in English. This group, which included Matisse, Derain and Vlaminck, was known for their bright color palettes and bold painterly qualities.
Presenting 29 Art Deco pochoir prints Van Dongen created as illustrations for Victor Margueritte's book La Garconne, "The Bachelor Girl" in English, published in 1925. The series was printed as a limited edition of 750. It is difficult to find individual prints from the series and it is rarely found as a complete collection. Van Dongen's images of slim, elegant women with short hair and large almond shaped-eyes, archetypal of the 1920's woman, perfectly match the characters Margueritte described in the book. This series reflects the sensuous high society portraits Van Dongen earned recognition for at the time. Van Dongen earned the prestigious French Legion of Honor award for this series of prints in 1926.
The Art Deco style is characterized by geometric lines, angular shapes, stepped forms, sweeping curves, and bold colors. The style reflects the rise of commerce and industry at the time. Using pochoir, a stencil process, Van Dongen was able to create sophisticated images and unusual color progressions. The pochoir technique is an important artistic method as a precursor to silkscreen printing or serigraph.
La Garconne opens Friday, July 25, 2008, from 5:00 - 9:00 p.m and Saturday, July 26, 2008, from 11:00 a.m.- 5:00 pm.. for Gallery Night and Day, and will continue through Saturday, October 11, 2008.

by Volker Kuhn
One of the most significant art movements of the twentieth century, Pop Art revolutionized the art world by combining traditional and commercial art trends. With their emphasis on popular culture and their adaptation of commercial methods, Pop artists transformed how the art world viewed art and made high art understandable for the masses. Opening reception is on Gallery Night, January 18, 2008, 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. The show runs from January 18 through April 12, 2008.
American Pop Art Artists in our collection include Andy Warhol, who is known as "the Pope of Pop," Roy Lichtenstein, whose work borrows heavily from advertising and comic book styles, Wayne Thiebaud, who is famous for his works depicting cakes, pastries, shoes, toys and lipsticks, Robert Rauschenberg, who is well-known for combining non-traditional materials and objects in innovative ways, James Rosenquist, whose specialty is taking fragmented, oddly disproportionate images and combining, them to create visual stories, Tom Wesselmann, who is known for his ubiquitous images using his wife as a model and Red Grooms, who is best known for his pop-art constructions depicting modern urban life.

Douglas Smith
An exhibit of 25 Oil on Canvas and Mixed Media Paintings will have its preview opening Friday, April 20 from 5-9 pm, and Saturday, April 21, from 11am-5pm in celebration of Milwaukee’s Gallery Night and Day. The exhibit will extend through Saturday, June 30, 2007.
Douglas Smith’s style has evolved from an early Plein Air painting tradition that was suitable for the New England environment where he painted for over two decades. His training as a professional illustrator led Smith to produce realistic renditions of many every day scenes whether they be pure landscapes, architectural elements or figures. A dramatic change in his approach evolved when Smith began traveling extensively in France and Italy. He soon discovered that every location has its own special light and atmosphere.
Another major transition occurred when Smith moved to the Southwest and experienced the grandeur of the majestic landscapes. The intense light, monumental forms and extreme sense of space in the high desert of New Mexico posed new challenges. Smith continues to enjoy the experience of traveling and painting the “live” landscape.

Kpetenkple
January 20 - April 14, 2007
Premiering World-Wide Only in Milwaukee, Wisconsin
The Gold Coast Exhibition of Kpetenkple
The lively and colorful art of newcomer Kpetenkple pushes thoughts of winter out of the mind and takes viewers on a voyage to the warm beauty of Africa. Kpetenkple’s painterly style captures the lively colors of the Ghana’s Atlantic coastline and the beauty of daily life. Though small in size, his pieces are larger than life as his warm and vivid color palette expands the space of the canvas and pushes the African way of life into one’s room. His abstract and simple looking forms expertly capture in line and layers of paint the look of women at work or the blue shores of the South Atlantic. Kpetenkple’s pieces bring warmth and color to a cold Wisconsin winter. The David Barnett Gallery offers both original acrylic works on paper and fine art giclee prints of Kpetenkple’s pieces. This exhibit will run from January 20 – April 14, 2007.

Katherine Hartley
An exhibit of 20 Mixed Media Paintings by Katherine Hartley had its preview opening on Friday, July 28th in celebration of Milwaukee’s Gallery Night and Day. The exhibit will extend through Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006. This is the premier exhibition in the U.S.A. for this talented young artist from Matlock, England. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Textile Arts from Manchester Metropolitan University. In 2004, Hartley won the Tiger Print Prize at the New Designers Show in London. Her ideas spring from a colorful imagination and a passion for pattern. Hartley draws inspiration from a multitude of places and things, such as recipes, travel books, markets, food packaging, fabrics and holiday photos. She creates her mixed media paintings using inks, crayons, papers, stitch fabrics, and acrylic and gouache paints. Hartley achieves an innocent and childlike style through the arrangement and rearrangement of images until a lovely storyline unfolds.

John Baughman and Jan Richardson Baughman
An exhibit of Mixed Media Paintings by John Baughman and Pastels by Jan Richardson Baughman was held on April 21, 2006 through July 22, 2006. This dynamic husband and wife duo from Michigan is nationally known for their respective work - John Baughman for his abstract colorful expressionist paintings and Jan Richardson Baughman for her elegant soft pastel landscapes. These soft landscapes create a feeling of bucolic peace and serenity. Janet says of her work, that it is like a dance or conversation in her head, which she expresses through her art. In contrast, John has been more interested in being experimental rather than traditional. His artistry has evolved into a more sophisticated look with his paintings having more layers and texture. John hopes that people viewing his art will find order and peace. Several of John and Jan’s artworks are still on display throughout the gallery.
