Block print in white on grey construction paper
9.25 x 12 in
'Figural Abstraction' is an original block print by American artist and teacher Sylvia Spicuzza. The image, printed in white ink against a grey paper, presents bold and graphic figures and abstract forms: a face in profile, dancing human forms, water-like waves, winding lines and shapes all come together in a dance of frenzy and play. Such abstracted arrangements were a favorite subject of Spicuzza in the mid-1950s when she made a larger series of watercolors and pastel drawings with a similar approach to form and space. This example in particular seems to draw from the Surrealist painter Francis Picabia with its emphasis on the face overlaid like a collage with surprising lines and forms. Block print in white on grey construction paper 9.25 x 12 inches, image 12 x 18.13 inches, sheet 19.38 x 21.88 inches, frame Bears artist's estate signature stamp below image, lower right. Presented in a modern-profile silver finish wood frame. Mounted to conservation standards using archival materials including 100 percent rag matting and Museum Glass to inhibit damage from UV rays. Good and stable condition; some fading to paper color; new custom frame.
