In this painting, Robert Richter has composed a tightly-cropped image of a leafy bush, paying attention to its individual sprigs and flowers. Below the shrub, a row of small flowers - perhaps dandelions - scatter the foreground like tiny trees. The bush itself is an orange-yellow, unlike the bright red bushes traditionally referred to by this name. This might suggest that Richter isn't so much interested in specific plant species, but in making the connections most any bush could have to literature. This playful ambiguity privileges faint memory over direct observation and is part of Richter's working process.
