This image is a colored engraving of a city view of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1873. The reverse depicts a lake view of the city of Racine, Wisconsin, a city to the south of Milwaukee. The image of Milwaukee shows a tree-lined street with stately homes in the foreground. Throughout the work, church spires punctuate the skyline, showing the influence of Polish Catholic immigrants in the city. The new courthouse, with its three domes, rises in the left background. Smokestacks near the lake, in the rear center of the engraving, point to the importance of industry to the city. While the origin of the work is unknown, it is similar to other nineteenth-century color engraved cityscapes done for publications like Harper's.
