'Sangria Mint' is an excellent example of the paintings of Daniel Klewer, coming from his series 'Linear Tactility.' The paintings in this series all share a consistent, linearly divided composition with investigations into the visual and psychological resonance of color relationships and texture. Color relationships, texture, and a brushless paint application dominate the paintings’ surface, while also questioning the figure-ground relationship: The sculptural paint feels as if it is reaching off the canvas towards the viewer like the spines of a cactus. At the same time, the vibrant colors draw the viewer back to the paintings’ surface. The title of this painting, 'Sangria Mint,' emphasizes the relationships we have to color and the other senses, looking to foodstuffs like mint and wine.
