Following in line with artists before her, like Rembrandt and van Gogh, Sandra Sweeny here presents a self portrait. The image is direct but subtle in its handling of materials, but also in the frank gaze of the artist. She looks directly at the viewer, confronting them with an expressionless face. The modeling of the portrait is built up with a limited palette of black, blue, yellow, and red ochre, unifying the image.
