‘Ten Commandments’ is an original giclée print on watercolor paper, signed by the artist in the lower right. In the composition, Barnett presents a still life of Jewish ritual objects, including the Torah, a tallit, and a menorah. Barnett has arranged the objects to appear as if they are in use; the candles of the menorah are lit, a dreidel spins, and the crease of the tallit coupled with the cradled angle of the Torah and tablets suggests an absent practitioner. Through the figure of the absent practitioner, Barnett initiates a complex hermeneutic on the location of lived religion—does lived religion exist within the practitioner themselves, or does it exist within the ritual objects that the practitioner uses to communicate with the sacred?
