Sandra Byers

Sandra Byers creates these small nature inspired translucent porcelain vessels using a variety of techniques. She begins some forms on the potter's wheel and then alter by handbuilding, cutting, and incising. She has been exploring some newer forms which she creates by handbuilding, pinching, and carving. She enjoys seeing how forms gradually come into being and trying to allow that to happen. She uses microcrystalline matt glazes on the colored pieces and a simple white matt on the interior of the white ones. In porcelain, she is trying to catch the delicacy as well as the strength of nature's details. These pieces come to life in the sunlight. Sandra Byers' vessels evoke the delicacy of nature - like petals of a flower, or the gills of a mushroom, or the form and detail of coral.
